Blood Clot Risk of Popular Yaz Contraceptive Draws Controversy

Government watchdog groups are sounding the alarm after an investigation into the approval of popular birth control pills, Yaz and Yasmin, revealed four Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisors had strong ties to the drug's manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

Yaz and Yasmin came under FDA review after a series of seven studies reviewing the serious side effects of Yasmin and Yaz indicated the contraceptives, which contain the active ingredient drospirenone, are more likely to cause dangerous blood clots in their users. Bayer had conducted its own studies and found the risk to be comparable to other contraceptives on the market.

After review of the studies, the FDA advisory committee voted 15 to 11 to keep Yaz and Yasmin on the market, reasoning the benefits of the contraceptives outweighed their risks. Curiously, the committee did recommend the labels on the drug be changed to warn physicians of the higher risk.

Texas Teens in Greater Danger on Roadways This New Year's Eve

They know it's the most dangerous night of the year for drinking and driving, yet they do it anyway. According to a recent survey conducted by Liberty Mutual and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), teenagers are more likely to drink and drive on New Year's Eve despite a common belief in the extreme perils of driving on that night.

The survey is especially alarming in light of an Allstate report released earlier this month, which found that more teenagers are dying in Texas auto wrecks than any other state. According to the report, 556 teens died in car accidents throughout the state in 2009.

The report stated that Texas needed to take action to tighten restrictions on teen driving.

Today, the Dallas Morning News reported a woman, who was seen driving with her hands behind her head, caused a fatal car accident while headed the wrong way down Interstate 35. The woman, who had her six-month old daughter in the back seat of her SUV, was allegedly intoxicated at the time.

The tragic story serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving while intoxicated during the holiday season. Drunk driving crashes will reach their peak over the next six weeks. This time also marks the five year anniversary of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Campaign to End Drunk Driving.

Undocumented Hispanic Immigrants May Pursue Personal Injury Claims

Most individuals coming to the United States hope to make a better life for themselves and their families. Because immigration procedures can be complex, some choose to take the risk of coming here without the proper visa. Undocumented workers in Texas learn to fear the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service from the moment they arrive.

When they are injured in either a car accident or fall at work, many Hispanics are hesitant to pursue a claim against their employer. Because of misinformation in the community, even contacting a workplace injury attorney can cause some to be afraid. What many Hispanics may not know is that ICE does not pursue individuals seeking compensation for a personal injury claim. They are focused primarily on criminal offenders.
